Dogs are known for having unbelievable survival instincts. They have good intuition and skills to cope with hard conditions. An abandoned mama dog in Hockley County Texas named Cedar was a lively proof for that. She made an impressive effort to keep her newborn puppies safe and sound.
Cedar gave birth to her puppies in mid-February, but unfortunately, a polar vortex hit not long after that. The mama dog was so smart and protective of her babies. She dug out 4 ½ feet downwards to save her pups from cold weather. Then she made another 20-foot-long curved tunnel. This could help Cedar hide her puppies from predators when she couldn’t keep an eye on them. This tunnel was big enough to keep the family warm, but Cedar needed food for herself.
Luckily, someone spotted her when she was in struggling situation.
One day, Sallie Morris, owner of Morris Safe House in the South Plains, received a call about a starving dog nearby her property’s tree line. Without hesitation, Morris prepared some food and brought it to the scene. It seemed like Cedar was not afraid of people. She started to run down the dirt road towards her.
Morris turned back every day with food for Cedar, trying to talk to her in order to gain her trust. On a particular day when Cedar was eating, Morries heard the cries of a puppy. Cedar didn’t let her get close to the pup at first, but not long after that, Morries finally could bring the tiny puppy back with her to the Safe House.
Soon enough, Morries found out that Cedar had three more puppies. Certainly, they still were in the tunnel that she made for them. But the tunnel was so small that rescuers could not go inside and find the other puppies.
“So immediately I went down with food, we couldn’t find them. I tool traps out and baited them so they would get in it.”
Besides the puppy at the Safe House, there were four more dogs in need of rescue. Fortunately, Morries already made acquaintance with Cedar so a few days later, she could bring the dog to the Safe House.
In the end, the three other puppies were rescued too. Four little pups were reunited with their mom at Morris Safe House. Just in case that there was any pup remaining in the tunnel, the Morris Safe House board members contacted local plumbers to carefully examine it and found that there was no more pup after the four rescued dogs.
The family now had a warm place to live together, and hopefully, they would have a lasting happy life. Cedar was such an amazing mom that she knew how to keep her babies all safe.
The dogs will be available for adoption soon. If you like this adorable family, follow Morris Safe House’s Facebook page to have more updates.
