Old Lady’s Heart Was Literally Broken After Her Beloved Puppy Passed Away

Joanie Simpson is a mother of a lovely dog. She named her Yorkie Meha. And for such a dog lover like Joanie, the loss of her beloved Yorkie was a huge shock that she couldn’t bear.

After the examination, Simpson was diagnosed with a rare condition called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or the broken-heart syndrome. It was different from what the doctor initially thought, a heart attack. Their symptoms are quite very similar but Takotsubo cardiomyopathy starts when patients have extreme changes in emotion such as the loss of their lover or children.

According to one survey in the New England Journal of Medicine published in 2005, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is caused by an unusually large amount of stress hormones that give the heart a shock, leading to painful and frightening spasms.

When she took medication, Simpson was facing a number of difficulties in her life including a perplexing sale of property, her family’s financial, and medical worries. But none of these depressed her as much as the fact she had lost Meha forever.

Simpson loves Joana so much that she treated Meha as her daughter. After a long struggle with congestive heart disease, Meha’s condition had worsened than ever before. Simpson can’t stand seeing Meha got hurt day by day, so she took Meha to the vet to have her put to sleep, but it was canceled in her hope when she saw some good signs of improvements in the dog. Sadly, Meha passed away at home one day after.

Simpson was 62 years old at that time and the fact that her case of broken-heart syndrome was partly led by the loss of her beloved dog. She had experienced “carer burdens” which made humans feel stress and anxiety when they faced the pain of losing loved ones.

After such a hard time paying lots of effort, Simpson has recovered. However, she must use heart medication. She still misses her lovely Meha and is not all ready to accept another dog.

“It is heartbreaking. It is traumatic. It is all of the above,” Simpson said. “But you know what? They give so much love and companionship that I’ll do it again. I will continue to have pets. That’s not going to stop me.”
