When it comes to the qualities of a good police dog, we have to mention their intelligence, aggression, strength, and sense of smell. They are specifically trained to assist police and other law-enforcement personnel. For this reason, if a dog is too cute and friendly, he is just not for this type of work.
Meet Gavel, the adorable German shepherd who was fired from k-9 job for being too friendly. Yup, instead of sniffing out explosives or tackling suspects for the Queensland Police Service in Brisbane, Eastern Australia, Gavel was more interested in getting belly tickles and cuddles from strangers.
Gavel was originally trained at the police dog academy, but ended up being a doggy dropout because he was too friendly and did not have the “necessary aptitude for a life on the front line,” according to the BBC.
Gavel’s trainers realized that the pup wouldn’t be able to continue being a police dog, so they decided to cut him from the training program. But fortunately, he wasn’t out on the streets. Thanks to his good-looking and great personality, he didn’t have to spend a lot of time getting a new job and a forever home.
Gov. Paul de Jersey adopted Gavel and gave him a better job working for the Governor of Queensland, where he holds the official title Vice-Regal Dog.
“He has outgrown four ceremonial coats, undergone a career change (his official title is now Gavel VRD, ‘Vice-Regal Dog’), and brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate,” the office of Governor Paul de Jersey told BBC News.
Gavel even got to sign the contract that says his tasks include welcoming guests and attending official ceremonies. Of course, sometimes he forgets all about the requirements for his position, but he still does it well.
A spokesman for the Office of the Governor told Gavel had become a “valued and much-loved” part of Government House life.
“Gavel on occasions sits in on briefings with the Governor,” he said. “He has also demonstrated his capacity to uphold the ceremonial importance of his role at State of Origin time.”
The governor’s office can’t get enough of Gavel’s cuteness, so they have started sharing many photos of his best moments on social media. After seeing the photos, we are happy to know that Gavel now gets to do what he does best: show a happy face and officially welcome new visitors.
